We went over the chapter 5 test today in most classes.

Students are required to write the correct answer and show the work for all questions they did not get right on the test when we go over it in class.
I will recollect the test after we go over them and award students points for correcting their test.
EVERYTHING on the chapter 5 test and quiz is important for the next two chapters, 6 and 7.
All three chapters deal with fractions.
If your child did not pass this quiz or test, then please try to help them understand the problems they did not get right.
You can do this by reading the textbook for that lesson, trying to solve the problems in the text, doing the Study Guide and Intervention workbook problems, watching youtube videos about that target skill, asking the teacher questions in class, finding a homework buddy, etc.
Students should do as many questions focusing on a target skill as it takes to finally understand and be able to the problems with ease.

These three chapters are 5 star lessons. Like learning to add and multiply, they are doomed to failure in math, if they do not learn fractions.

6-1 is due and has not been checked yet. We will check it on Thursday or Friday when we are done reviewing the chapter 5 test.

ADVANCED class. We will check 6-1 Thursday. I will have a substitute tomorrow afternoon.

Please read information about progress reports that I posted last time.

Ms. Thompson is hospitalized. I expect she will be out until after the Christmas break. Ms. Diamond and I are entering her grades; however, we are no where near done. Therefore, please be patient concerning science grades. The grades will all be entered; so check Skyward regularly to see updated grades in this subject.

THIS IS NOT THE FINAL GRADE that will appear on the report card. ONLY the report card grade matters.

The FINAL grade on the report card will be the grades that are in the computer in the Skyward program ON JANUARY 21, 2010. That is the LAST day of the 2nd 9 week period.

If your child has an F in a subject, it is possible they may bring the grade up by January 21, 2010.
If your child has an A in a subject, it is possible they will do poorly between now and then, and receive an F on the report card.

THE BEST THING TO DO IS TO CHECK SKYWARD REGULARLY FOR THE MOST UP-TO-DATE GRADES IN ALL SUBJECTS!

What do grades mean in Skyward?
Q1 grades are over. They reference the 1st nine week period.
Q2 grades are on-going. They are not final yet. They are for the 2nd nine week period.
S1 grades are on-going. They will be compiled as follows. The S1 grade = the Q1 grade (20%) plus the Q2 grade (20%) plus the semester exam grade (10%).

If you have questions, you can write a comment, or call me, or email me.

I put the test off for chapter 5 until tomorrow. This is because this site wasn’t working too well over the weekend. That should give everyone at least one evening to look it over in advance.

6-1 will be due on Wednesday. Try looking up youtube and try to search the target skill for rounding fractions to the nearest half. If that doesn’t work, try something like rounding fractions.

The period 5 class will have a chapter 5 quiz tomorrow. I don’t have time to post it right now-I still have to collect my son, but it will follow strictly the exact same format that was on the homework throughout chapter 5. I will take the questions from the Study and Intervention Guide Workbook first, so that would be a good study guide. The other place I’ll take the questions from is the blue math textbook.

Please read email sent to me about this event. We will not have a math field trip this year, but it would be a very worthwhile family event-FUN for all ages EVEN IF you are NOT a math family or science family.

December 4th, 2009

Re: SOUTHERN OAKS MIDDLE SCHOOL’s participation in our Engineering EXPO 2010.

Greetings

TALEESE WALSH,

The University of South Florida College of Engineering, and the Engineering EXPO staff are pleased to invite you and your class, youth group or family to the 38th annual Engineering EXPO. This year’s event will be held on Friday, February 19, and Saturday, February 20, 2010, from 9AM to 4PM. The Engineering EXPO has been held annually since 1973 in celebration of National Engineers’ Week. The event works as a venue to promote the engineering field, our institution, and the potential of our students.

One of our main goals is to educate elementary, middle, and high school age students on how math, science, engineering, and technology affect our everyday lives. Engineering Expo will provide students from all over the state of Florida with an opportunity to see engineering and other related technology at work through exhibits from the University’s student organizations, private industry and government agencies. Your students will have the opportunity to participate in activities where they can have some “hands-on” engineering experience.

Among some of the past events/shows (and some this year’s) during the two days of Engineering EXPO include the following: “The Science of Everything” by the Society of Physics Students, Gumdrop and spaghetti tower competition by Tau Beta Pi (Engineering Honor Society), Tours of our Nanotechnology lab facilities, mini baja and formula race cars made by the Society of Automotive Engineers, a concrete canoe made by Society of Civil Engineers, a Chemical Magic Show, Laser Lights Show and so much more. In addition, the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) has performed a very interesting astronomy show. These are just a few examples of the amazing ways you and your students, youth groups and/or families can explore the world of engineering.

The open house on Friday is typically composed of students coming on school field trips from all over the state and beyond! However, Saturday is usually composed of visitors from the general public as well as youth groups, including the Boy and Girl Scouts from all over who will have the opportunity to earn their Engineering Merit Badge. Either day you choose to come, you should be pleasantly educationally enlightened in engineering!

We look forward to your positive response to this letter to participate in EXPO 2010. For more information about getting involved and registering for USF’s Engineering EXPO, please go to the Engineering EXPO’s website, or contact our staff by email/phone at your convenience.

Thank you for your time and have a great day!

Sincerely,

USF Engineering EXPO 2010 Staff

The chapter 5 test will be no later than Tuesday, possibly Monday.
Check back on blog this weekend for the posting of test. I will probably create it no sooner than Saturday morning and no later than Sunday morning. In the meantime, make sure your child understands the concepts of all lessons. Work practice problems from workbooks and the textbook. Grades for today’s test are posted on Skyward unless your student is finishing up on Monday or was absent.

This is a gift offered to the community by the dentists and their staffs in the spirit of the season, so that no one, especially a child has to wake up Christmas morning with a toothache.
