Hi Mrs. Walsh it’s me K. It’s nice learning all about you and about the school on this website.
About
Welcome! Come learn about Southern Oaks Middle School, 6th grade, our Talons team and Ms. Walsh.
Where is the school?
Who can attend?
Southern Oaks Middle School, in the heart of St. Lucie County, Florida, is a 6-8 school for students who live in the county’s southeastern “blue” attendance zone.
St. Lucie County School Attendance Zone Map
What will my class be like?
In sixth grade, students will be placed on one of two teams. Students will follow their own individual schedules within their team of teachers throughout the school day.
What will my school day be like?
There are 7 class periods of 45 minutes each and a 30 minute lunch period.
At 8:55 a.m., the bell rings and students may go to the cafeteria for breakfast .
The first period begins at 9:15.
Dismissal begins at 3:45 p.m.
Before- and after-school care
21st Century is an available program for students whose parents need a safe place for them before or after school and/or for students who need extra help mastering their schoolwork. It provides study and activity times. 21st Century also offers summer camps. The cost is free; however, students should enroll quickly as limited space is available. 21st Century is NOT OFFERED at SOMS this year; however, SOME students who meet various requirements may be able to enroll in 21st Century programs on a different campus. Ms. Walsh is not involved in the 21st Century program.
What classes can I take?
All students take courses in reading, math, science, language arts, and social studies.
Electives are available in band (led by Mrs. Kinder-our school band won all superiors and were 1st Place State Champions in 2007-2008), PE, business (how to use a checking account, create a business plan…), technology (incorporates a lot of physics experiments-making rollercoasters, a pallet that can withstand the most weight…), and art (creating mosaics, painting, drawing…).
What about my grades?
Students and families will have immediate access to grades through the new web-based Skyward program new to our district this year.
Team leaders will print out progress reports and send them home with students once each 9 week grading period. Those dates are available in your student school calendars and are as follows: Wednesday, September 30, 2009; Wednesday, December 9, 2009; Friday, February 26, 2010; Wednesday, May 12, 2010.
Some teachers may choose to provide more frequent progress reports at various times throughout the school year.
However, parents may access their student’s current grades at any time 24/7, through use of the Skyward program available at www.stlucie.k12.fl.us. Then click on the parent tab at the top of the page.
Free math tutoring at IRSC
In the past, free math tutoring has been available four days per week from 2:45 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at IRSC in Fort Pierce for middle school and high school students. Students must provide their own transportation. Call (772) 462-4700 and ask to speak with Marta Cronin, chair of the Education Department, or Tim Romano, clinical educational coordinator.
Who are the 6th grade Talons team teachers?

People are asking for more games on HoodaMath, LJ. I agree, I think more games would make the site even better. I do like it that all age groups can play though, don’t you?
Ya I do agree with you there and the other thing I wanted to say was about the other extra credit the thing I liked about it was that it allowed you to go on this as it is personel I think that they should fix this bug I found where I cant find it on my family computer and I have to go on it on my moms laptop if I were to rate it I would give it a 4 in my opinion the extras should be better I think that $20 isnt good I think it should be like $20 for your whole life well se you tommorow peace out!

I think that’s a very valid point. The thought of paying one time for a game and owning the right to play it forever, (like downloading a song or movie from iTunes) is more appealing than constantly having to cough up $20/month. If you are down to your last nickel at the end of the month, it’s hard to afford justifying the purchase of the right to play a game. However, there are months when you may have extra money to spare and can afford a small luxury, that’s not necessarily a necessity of living. With a lot of new inventions the price decreases the more users the product gains. Just think of calculators and cell phones: they were once unaffordable for the masses and now they can be had for as low as $1 or even for free.
