Florida’s Next Generation Sunshine State Standards

To be taught effectively AFTER the 2010 FCAT administration (last Wednesday, March 10, 2010-for math)

NOTE: The transition from the Florida Sunshine State Standards to the Florida Next Generation Sunshine State Standards is:

1. Happening ONLY NOW, even though the new standards were adopted in September 2007 as the OLD standards were tested on the FCAT up until this year (this month).

2. Represents a HUGE (FANTASTIC) change in what math will be taught when.
The old Sunshine State Standards required teachers in 4 through 8th grade courses to teach the exact same math-just kicked up a notch each year to these 4 to 5 grade levels (depending on whether 8th graders took Math Course III or Pre-Algebra). Each grade was responsible to teach MORE THAN 100 Standards in a 180 day school year with classes of 45 minutes per day.

This meant the focus was on BREADTH NOT DEPTH of knowledge.

Now students in grades 6, 7, and 8 (Math Course i, II, and III) are required to learn only 19 to 22 math standards per year.

What does this accomplish:
1. Depth of knowledge.
2. Mastery of target skills. (In the past, if your child did not understand a concept, no matter how difficult, in one to two days-too bad; a teacher HAD to move on, in order to teach all required skills in the course of a school year.
NOW, a teacher and student will be given the opportunity to really learn, understand, and explore not only the math algorithms (step-by-step, rote instructions for solving a problem), but the meaning behind the math through inquiry, use of concrete manipulatives, pictorial representations, and abstract formulations.
I BELIEVE WHOLEHEARTEDLY, this will result in a better, more authentic and meaningful learning experience for students and teachers alike.
3. Non-repetition of standards taught from one year to the next.
NOTE: It becomes critical that your student learns the skills required the year they are taught. They are the necessary building blocks for the following years skills.
4. The ability of students to truly learn the prerequisite skills required for the next level of math.
