1 6 09 Homework and Semester Exam information

Posted by: mswalsh | January 6, 2009 | 1 Comment |

IMPORTANT NOTE:

There will be a semester end exam for all subjects the week of the 19th. Math will be given on the 20th/21st of January.

The test will be the same in all SOMS classes for the course your student is in. Math students will take the 6th grade test. Advanced Math students will take the 7th grade test. Pre-Algebra students will take the 8th grade test.

This is to provide consistency in the credit students receive for all course offerings throughout our school.

TO PREPARE:

Students should begin studying TONIGHT for this exam.

Go over each chapter we have covered in class. Use the workbook pages which your student should have saved. When we went over the answers in class your student was required to correct all wrong answers AND show the work. Practice the easiest question and the hardest question on each page. Be sure to review each type of question. The target skill is listed at the top of each workbook page. Study past tests. These were corrected by the teacher, but gone over in class with an opportunity for every student to clarify any remaining questions.

By studying a chapter or half a chapter a night, students will not have to cram for this exam. The exam comprises a large component of the semester grade in math as mandated by the district, so it is important to study in advance, review, and do your best on the test.

Expect the semester exam to be between 20 and 25 questions in length.

Remember, important critical information is VERY likely to be tested. For example: Powers and Exponents, Order of Operations, Two-Step Equations.

Need extra help:

Try these ideas:

Read the textbook. Read the Study Guide workbook examples (if applicable). Use this blog. Go to teachertube.com or youtube.com and type in the target skill. View a 5 minute video of various teachers teaching how to do all of the problems presented that you may not understand. Review your class notes. Practice additional problems from the textbook. Read Math Doesn’t Suck by Danica McKellar. Free tutoring in math and other subjects is available at IRSC to middle schoolers and high schoolers. You must provide your own transportation.

You can also, and SHOULD, ask your teacher for help whenever you need assistance understanding something. That’s what we are here for: to do our very best to ensure that you are able to master the skills required in 6th grade.

Finally, in the end, it is up to each student to do their very best.

Math Period 1: 6-4 both

Pre-Algebra: Began GREAT Program today presented by the Sheriff’s Department to educate youth about gang resistance. Make sure you do remaining four questions that students had trouble with during homework.

Advanced Math: Chapter 4 math test tomorrow. Students can pick which of end of chapter test they will take. NOT the Mid-chapter test. NOTE: These tests are in the textbook your student has at home. It is strongly advised that they study them prior to taking the test.

Period 6/7:

7-4 Tuesday both (due Wednesday)

 7-5 Wednesday both (due Friday)
